If you are into boho aesthetics, you have surely seen a dream catcher before.

Usually hanging on the wall or over a bed, dream catchers are believed to be dream filters that catch bad dreams and allow only the good ones to pass through. Native Americans in particular used dream catchers as a spiritual tool to protect people, especially children, from nightmares and evil spirits.

So, as a symbol, dream catchers signify protection, care and love as it is believed that dream catchers have the power to capture bad dreams. They do so within its dream catcher’s web, the feathers are supposed to flutter in the dreamer’s breath to carry away those bad dreams.

How to DIY dream catcher earrings

If you are feeling crafty and want to make dream catcher earrings of your own, here’s what you have to do.

  1. First, get your tools. Dream catchers have two important parts - the circle with the spider net inside, and the three of more feathers hanging down from it.
  2. So the easiest way to make boho handmade dream catcher earrings is to start from a pair of plain hoop earrings. Skinny hoops may be more difficult to work with, but the finished earring will look better.
  3. Next, prepare your feathers. It is up to you if you want to leave them naturally colored, if you will spray-dye them or gild them for extra drama. Either way, you will need to finish the feathers by enclosing the root of each feather in a metal holder or wire-wrap it, so that you can fasten the feather to the hoop.
  4. Then decide on the look of the dream catcher earring. You can go for minimalist dream catchers and skip the spider web part completely - the earrings will not be worn in your sleep anyway so you don’t need to keep it completely faithful. Minimalist dream catcher earrings could be just the skinny hoop with a couple of beads on it, the feathers hanging separated by a bead or two in between.

If you want to go the whole nine yards with your boho look, use a single basic macrame knot to wrap the metal hoop in a cotton or leather string. Then you can easily work on the middle part, using the string on the hoop as your base.

Add in some dark and gilded beads to take it to the more luxurious Gypsy boho aesthetic.

You can also take your dream catcher earrings to the 80s level by adding in colorful beads, or make it look more contemporary and minimalist with black or silver metal details.

Handmade dream catcher earrings are a beautiful way to carry this spiritual symbolism with you wherever you go. These dream catcher earrings make perfect adornments for any outfit and can be a great conversation starter. Plus, they make excellent gifts!
